Fort Augustus, formerly known as Kilchuimen, derived its current name after the 1715 Jacobite rebellion when the fort was named after Prince William Augustus, later becoming the infamous Duke of Cumberland.

Situated alongside the canal, Loch Ness Gate House offers easy access to embark on a cruise on the legendary Loch Ness or to explore the Great Glen Way for walking or cycling enthusiasts. Additionally, you can now experience the new circular route around Loch Ness known as Loch Ness 360 Degrees.

The nearby flight of locks on the canal serves as a fascinating sight, where you can enjoy a moment of relaxation with a drink or coffee, observing the marine traffic navigate through this remarkable waterway, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2022.

Fort Augustus is a well-equipped and popular destination, making it an ideal base for day trips in all directions. Whether you wish to venture north, south, east, or west, you can conveniently return to our comfortable lodge at the end of your explorations.

Within the village, there are plenty of activities and attractions to enjoy, from The Clansman Centre to the canal visitor exhibition. Additionally, you can indulge in some Highland retail therapy at both Cobbs and Fort Augustus gift shop, located opposite the main garage next to the public car park.
